JAGANNATH DAS RATNAKAR

Jagannathdas Ratnakar (1866 – 21 June 1932) was a distinguished Braj Bhasha poet known for his contributions to modern Hindi literature. Born on Bhadrapad Shukla Panchami in 1866, he hailed from a wealthy family in Kashi. Despite receiving early education in Persian, Ratnakar excelled in English studies and showed academic promise from a young age. His poetic journey began under the guidance of Sardar Kavi and was influenced by renowned poets like 'Navneet' Chaturvedi. At the age of 30-32, Ratnakar ventured into Zardezi work before becoming the treasurer of Avagarh state. Encouraged by interactions with Bharatendu Harishchandra and Kashi's poetic circles, he transitioned to writing in Braj Bhasha in 1889. Ratnakar's poetic debut, 'Hindola,' marked the beginning of a prolific literary career. He actively participated in literary initiatives and publications, showcasing his dedication to Hindi literature and cultural advancement. Ratnakar's legacy endures through his poetic works and contributions to the literary landscape of his time. Jagannathdas Ratnakar, the eminent Braj Bhasha poet, left a profound impact on Hindi literature through his versatile works. Some of his notable creations include 'Gangavataran' (1923), a Purakhyan poem depicting mythological narratives, 'Uddhavashtak,' an insightful essay poem, and 'Hindola' (1894), a collection of Muktak poems reflecting his poetic prowess. His literary repertoire also includes 'Kalkashi,' 'Samalochanadarsh' (an essay in verse), 'Shringarla.
